The Avanyu, water serpent is the storm bringer and connected with lightning, thunderstorms and the Guardian of water. It is also revered as the changer of seasons and is represented by a horned serpent. The meandering curves of the serpent are suggestive of flowing water (rivers) or the zigzag of lightning. This design is used on the black pottery of the Tewa Pueblos of Northern New Mexico.
